I’ve never felt strongly one way or another about Valentine’s Day, single or otherwise.
Usually single.
These days, all it means is that is the one day that Lloyd will come home with flowers, unprompted, at which point I will point out that he overpaid for the roses that I will inevitably kill overnight. And I’ll get a card from the Mahogany section because there were none left because obviously Lloyd went to CVS right after he left the gas station, arms full of roses.
Unfortunately, if I told him not to bother, I fear it would be the one time he might listen. And then I’d have to complain about how he didn’t even get me roses… and I’d have to act mad, even though he did what I said, and then he’d give me the whole, “I don’t need one day to show you I love you. I do that every day.”
I’d have to remind him that there are 364 other days a year when I also don’t get flowers or cards. And while we’re on the subject, Lloyd… how about the fact that I show you that I love you every day by making your favorite dinners and treats? Do you want me to stop doing that?
I’d get the Lloyd eye roll and his infamous line when he is out of comebacks…
“I know. I’m the worst boyfriend ever. Your life is so tough.”
I usually stay mad for all of 30 seconds before Lloyd does something to make me laugh, and all is right in the world again.
Except he still overpaid for those roses.
Sucka!!!
Need to show someone you love them? This recipe works today, and the other 364 days a year!
Petite Vanilla Scones
Ingredients
Scones
-
3 cups All-purpose Flour
-
⅔ cup Sugar
-
5 teaspoons Baking Powder
-
¼ teaspoons Salt
-
2 sticks unsalted Butter, Chilled
-
1 whole large egg
-
¾ cups Heavy Cream (more if needed)
Glaze
-
2 whole Vanilla Beans
-
3 cups Powdered Sugar, Sifted
-
½ cups Whole Milk
-
1 whole Vanilla Bean
-
Dash Of Salt
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
-
Split the vanilla beans down the middle lengthwise and scrape out all the vanilla “caviar” inside. Stir caviar into cream. Set aside for 15 minutes.
-
Sift together flour, 2/3 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut cold butter into pats, then use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the butter into the flour. Keep going until mixture resembles crumbs. -
Mix vanilla cream with egg, then combine with flour mixture; stir gently with a fork just until it comes together.
-
Turn dough onto a floured surface and lightly press it together until it forms a rough rectangle. (Mixture will be pretty crumbly.) Use a rolling pin to roll into a rectangle about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch thick. Use your hands to help with the forming if necessary.
-
Use a knife to trim into a symmetrical rectangle, then cut the rectangle into 12 symmetrical squares/rectangles. Next, cut each square/rectangle in half diagonally, to form two triangles.
-
Transfer to a parchment or baking mat-lined cookie sheet and bake for 18 minutes, removing from the oven just before they start to turn golden. Allow to cool for 15 minutes on the cookie sheet, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
-
To make the icing, split one vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape out the caviar. Stir caviar into milk; allow to sit for awhile. Mix powdered sugar with the vanilla milk, adding more powdered sugar or milk if necessary to get the consistency the right thickness. Stir or whisk until completely smooth.
-
One at a time, carefully dunk each cooled scone in the glaze, turning it over if necessary. Transfer to parchment paper or the cooling rack. Allow the glaze to set completely, about an hour. Scones will keep several days if glazed.
Truth be told, I had never tried these legendary Starbucks scones until one of my favorite blog buddies, Holly, asked me to re-create them! I remembered seeing on The Pioneer Woman and knew I had to look further for a knock-off recipe. I told Holly that it gave me an excuse to “do some research” at Starbucks and she was sweet enough to send me a gift card so that I could treat myself to one! I had to order the vanilla beans online, and as soon as they arrived I got to work. I deemed the first batch too ugly for the blog. Taste-wise, they were a hit with Lloyd and my co-workers. Once I purchased a mini-scone pan from Williams Sonoma, I was ready to make more!
Not to toot my own horn, but I think these might be better than Starbucks!
Toot, toot!
My favorite part is how dense and moist these are, while the crumbs are still tender and flaky! The vanilla beans not only lent the scones an authentic “homemade” taste, but also gave them a speckled appearance. My glaze is almost invisible (I’m not sure how Ree got hers so “white”!) which may trick you into thinking these taste plain or boring, but after one bite, you’ll taste the layer of sweet, sugary goodness.
These all but disappeared from the break room at work. Lloyd went to town on these and even scolded me when I brought some to his niece and nephews this past weekend when we babysat. His nephew G, the world’s pickiest eater, had five for breakfast. (We won’t talk about the chocolate Nutella alfajores he demolished). When Lloyd saw the damage he proclaimed, “Hey! G ate all my scones!”
However you spend your Valentine’s Day, I hope it’s a good one. I’ll be looking forward to my gas station roses and that Mahogany card all day.
Psssst! Have you liked Blog is the New Black on Facebook yet? Once I get to 250 likes, there will be a giveaway!

I looked at buying vanilla beans from the grocery again this weekend…but just couldn’t part with $11.99 for 2
Your scones look AMAZING though and I think the little bean flecks make it look so authentic
Kristen, check out Beanilla! I researched on the internet where to get the most bang for your buck… I went with Beanilla. They are expensive but you can get like 20 for maybe $30? I know that’s a lot but it’s way cheaper than the grocery store! They came vacuum packed and I just sealed them again in a ziploc.
I love scones and I love vanilla beans, so this would be the perfect match for me! My mom and I even took a cooking class to make scones….only because we came home with 2 dozen scones each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Humor is so key! Love these scones – beautiful, too! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Liz, you are the best. Please be my Valentine. I promise to buy you roses
hahaha
But seriously, THANK YOU x a million for this recipe! I’m heading to the Williams Sonoma site now to look for mini scone pans.
I’m 110% POSITIVE that yours taste way better than Starbucks!!
xoxo (cocks) <— HAHAHAHA
These look delicious. I think they’d make a perfect Valentine snack…dipped in chocolate maybe.
Mental roses and hug to you!
You are too funny. I swear you make me laugh so hard whenever I read your blog.
They look sooo good.
I love the petite vanilla scones from Starbucks. If you say they might be better than Starbucks, then I have to try them!
These scones look great! I definitely scold my husband when he buys roses on Valentine’s Day because they’re SO overpriced. But it is sweet when they think to buy them.
Is this a new look for your blog? looks great!
I love these scones! They remind me of the little vanilla scones from Starbucks. Every once in a while i get those as a little treat for myself – not as often as I’d like though. Happy valentine’s day, Liz!
Too funny, always a cute post from you my dear! These look really delicious!
Okay, I’m bookmarking these. I’ve been so in love with the Starbucks scones that I had to try them at home. Mine don’t look this good, though.
Your post made me smile.
I love vanilla beans. Thank you for the Beanilla info, I will buy from them.
Hi! I love this recipe, I am definitely adding it to my “to-make” list! Thanks!
These scones look beautiful! If I told Josh not to bother, he would. So I make sure to go as far as even ‘hint’ for things. And by hint I mean leave pictures of things I want/need on his desk… Yes, it sounds bratty, but Ive yet to see this actually work so Im going to keep trying
I bet these are way better than Starbucks. Honestly I would rather get something for the kitchen, or a cookbook than flowers. The typical Valentine flowers (roses) don’t last very long her because of the heat anyway, so I’d rather have something I could always keep.
Love these!! I’ve had this recipe bookmarked forever and now you’ve just reminded me that I need to get to it
Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
I love those little scones at Starbucks, but if these are more moist, I’m sold! I even have that little scone pan from W-S!
Liz, these scones look so warm and wonderful! Plus, I love anything with vanilla so these are definitely a winner. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Your scones look yummy, thanks for sharing and have a great day!
Your post made me literally laugh out loud! Those do look delicious! Hope you have a good Valentines Day whether Lloyd brings you flowers or not!
These scones look delicious! Love your plate too!
When I read about the Mahogany card on my reader at work this morning, I busted out laughing. It was a good thing the third graders were not in the room.
These scones look and sound delicious.
They look so scrumptious! And perfect. I love that pretty dish too!
Thanks- Homegoods!
Hehehe… nothing wrong with those cards, but the just don’t apply to me! He ended up paying $8 for a card.
You will love them! So moist!
Haha, I’d do the same thing… like for my birthday I said, “you could get me a new camera case.” So subtle, right?!
These are so pretty! I can almost taste the vanilla bean in them just from these pictures
Love this post! I plan to make scones again following this! My first attempt failed miserably. I’m curious though how would the instructions change if using a scone pan over Silpat and baking sheets? Would it be more like taking equal amounts of dough and pressing into each section? Can you tell I’m not much of a baker?
Those are adorable! I love vanilla scones.
The smell of those had to be ammmmazing! They look so good!
These look great. I get those all the time at starbucks. I think i’ll just make this version instead.
Oh, those Starbux scones are so addictive! Can’t wait to give your version a try!
You crack me up! I’m the same way with flowers…I know I will most likely kill them in 24 hours or less, but it’s still nice to get them!
@Heather, Mine are dying!
I haven’t met a scone I did not like and these look so wonderful! I love the petit vanilla scones at Starbucks and I cannot wait to try these!
@Mercedes@Satisfy My Sweet Tooth, Aw, thanks!
